Algebra I: Determining the slope from equation of a line (y=mx+b)
This is a free lesson from our course in Algebra I

It explains the concept of slope and shows how to determine the slope from the standard form of equation of a line:
              y = mx + b.
Slope is a measure of the steepness or slant of a line, and when you are asked to calculate the slope of a given line, rearrange the equation in the standard form given by y = mx + b. In this form, m is the slope of the equation.E.g. : Determine the slope of the line y – 4x = 3. You have to first rearrange the above equation in standard form i.e. y = mx +c. To rearrange the equation into standard form we put term with 'x' to the right hand side of equation with the change in sign and keep the 'y' term to the left hand side. As the result you'll get y = 4x + 3 which is the standard form. So, the slope of the line is 4.
