Algebra I: Determining the y-intercept from equation of a line (y=mx+b)
This is a free lesson from our course in Algebra I

In this lesson you learn how to determine the y-intercept of a line if you have been given its equation. In the equation y = mx + b, the constant b is called the y-intercept, and is the y-coordinate of the point at which the line intersects the y-axis. Hence, to find the y-intercept for any given equation, rearrange the equation into the standard form y = mx + b, and b will give you the y-intercept. Or in other words, to find the y-intercept of a graph, you must find the value of y when x = 0, because at every point on the y-axis, x = 0. But when the equation has the form y = ax + b, the y-intercept is simply b. When x = 0, y = 0 + b = b. The lesson also explains how to graph a line after determining its y-intercept.
