Amsco Integrated Algebra I: Factoring Trinomials

 This lesson explains how to factorize trinomials, which is most common polynomial you may be asked for. To factorize a trinomial of the form ax2+bx+c, find two binomials that have the following characteristics: • product of the first terms of the binomials is equal to the first term of the trinomial. • product of the last terms of the binomials is equal to the last term of the trinomial. • when the first term of each binomial is multiplied by the last term of the other binomial and the sum of these products is determined, the result is equal to the middle term of the trinomial.  (Continued from above) For example, Factors of trinomial, a2+3a+2=(a+2)(a+1). The product of first terms of these factors is a2 and last terms is 2 so 1 & 2 characteristics are satisfied. Next when the first term of both the factors i.e. a is multiplied by last terms of both factors i.e. by 1 & 2 products are a and 2a and their sum is 3a which is equal to trinomial's middle term so characteristic (3) is also satisfied. Therefore, the factors of the trinomial a2+3a+2 are (a+2)(a+1). The video below explains it in detail with the help of several examples.
