 Amsco Integrated Algebra I: Solving Equations That Have the Variable in Both Sides

This lesson explains how to solve equations having variables on both sides. To solve such equations transform into an equivalent equation having variables on one side only and then solve the equation. For example, to solve the equation: 65 – 6x = 4x – 5, the steps are given below
Write the equation 65 – 6x = 4x – 5
Step 1. Transform it into an equation in which the variable appears on right side
Step 2. Add 6x to each side 65 – 6x + 6x = 4x – 5 + 6x

Step 3. Add 5 to both sides. 65 + 5 = 10x – 5 + 5
          70 = 10x
Step 4. Divide each side by 10
          70/10 = 10x/10
          7 = x. Therefore, x = 7
