 Amsco Integrated Algebra I: Using Letters to Represent Numbers

This lesson you’ll learn how to translate verbal phrases into algebraic expressions, using letters as variables and using symbols to represent operations. It covers verbal phrases involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, commas. For example in case of multiplication: the product of a number and the same number less 5 i.e. x(x – 5) is meaning, the words ‘the product of’ tell us we're going to multiply a number times the number less 5. In this case, we'll use parentheses to represent the multiplication. The words ‘less 5’ tell us to subtract five from the unknown number. Similarly it can be done for addition, subtraction, and division. The video below will explain in detail with the help of several examples.
