This lesson explains the concept further on from your earlier learning about writing an equation in slope-intercept form and when y-intercept is known. You’ll learn here how to write the equation, given the slope and one point which is not the y-intercept. To write an equation given the slope and one point, use y = mx + b for the equation. Replace m with the given slope and the coordinates of the given point for x and y. Solve the equation for the y-intercept, b. Rewrite the equation with the slope for m and the y-intercept for b. (Continued from above) For example: Write an equation, if the slope is 2 and the line passes through the point (5, 11).
To solve this the steps are as given below:
• use slope-intercept form y = mx + b
• replace m with the slope y = 2x + b
• replace x and y 11= 2* 5 + b
• solve for b 1= b
• rewrite the equation Y = 2x + 1
