Example: The perimeter of a rectangle field is 84m and its area is 360m2. Find the breadth of the rectangular field. Solution: Let the breadth of the field be x metres. So,
Perimeter = 84m
2(Length + Breadth)= 84
Length + x = 42
Now,
Area = 360m2
Length x Breadth = 360
(42 - x)x = 360
42x - x2= 360
x2- 42x + 360 = 0
x2- 30x - 12x + 360 = 0
x(x - 30) - 12(x - 30) = 0
(x - 12)(x - 30) = 0
x = 12 or x = 30
Therefore, breadth of the field is 12m or 30m.
