Small part of the explanation from video:
English: We are going to learn the characteristics of some irregular verbs with stem changes in the present indicative tense: e>ie, o > ue, u > ue, e>i
Spanish: Vamos a aprender las características de algunos verbos irregulares con cambios en la raíz en el tiempo presente de indicativo: e>ie, o > ue, u > ue, e>i
English: The change from ‘e’> ‘ie’. Look at the following example for the verb ‘to think’ in singular: pienso, piensas, piensa and the third person plural piensan, but in the first person plural the stem doesn’t change; ‘Nosotros pensamos’ neither it changes on the second person plural vosotros pensáis.
Spanish: El cambio de ‘e’ > ‘ie’. Mira el siguiente ejemplo para el verbo ‘pensar’: en singular: pienso, piensas, piensa, y en la tercera persona del plural piensan, pero en la primera persona del plural la raíz no cambia; nosotros pensamos, tampoco cambia en la segunda persona del plural vosotros pensáis.
English: I call this stem change “the L rule” because in the conjugation the stem changing verbs form a letter L. This rule is applied for the verbs that change the vowel ‘e’ in the infinitive for ‘ie’ in the conjugation. Other similar verbs are ‘querer’’: quiero, quieres, etc., ‘preferir’: prefiero, prefieres, etc., and ‘empezar’: empiezo, empiezas, etc.
Spanish: Llamo a este cambio en la raíz del verbo “la regla de la ele”, porque en la conjugación los verbos que cambian la raíz forman una letra ele. Esta regla se aplica para los verbos que cambian la vocal ‘e’ del infinitivo a ‘ie’ en la conjugación. Otros verbos similares son ‘querer’: quiero, quieres, etc., ‘preferir’: prefiero, prefieres, etc., y ‘empezar’: empiezo, empiezas, etc.
English: The change ‘o’ to ‘ue’. Let’s take a look at the conjugation of the verb ‘volver’’: vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, volvemos, volvéis, vuelven. Can you see the L rule here? Other verb with the same conjugation is ‘devolver’. The same thing happens with the verbs ‘dormir’: duermo, duermes, etc., ‘almorzar’: almuerzo, almuerzas, etc. y ‘acordar’: acuerdo, acuerdas, etc.
Spanish: El cambio ‘o’ a ‘ue’. Veamos la conjugación del verbo ‘volver’: vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, volvemos, volvéis, vuelven. ¿Puedes ver la regla de la ele aquí? Otro verbo con la misma conjugación es devolver. Ocurre lo mismo con los verbos ‘dormir’: duermo, duermes, etc., ‘almorzar’: almuerzo, almuerzas, etc. y ‘acordar’: acuerdo, acuerdas, etc.
English: The change from ‘u’ to ‘ue’. Now observe what happens with the verb ‘jugar’: juego, juegas, juega, pero jugamos, jugáis, juegan. Remember the L rule.
Spanish: El cambio de la ‘u’ a ‘ue’. Ahora observa qué pasa con el verbo ‘jugar’: juego, juegas, juega, pero jugamos, jugáis, juegan. Recuerda la regla de la ele.
English: The change from ‘e’ to ‘i’ Pay attention to the verb pedir: pido, pides, pide, pedimos, pedís, piden. Look at the L. Other similar verbs are: ‘seguir’: sigo, sigues, etc., ‘repetir’: repito, repites, etc.
Spanish: El cambio de la ‘e’ a ‘i”. Pon atención al verbo pedir: pido, pides, pide, pedimos, pedís, piden. Mira la ele. Otros verbos similares son ‘seguir’: sigo, sigues, etc., ‘repetir’: repito, repites, etc.
English: It’s not so complicated, is it? Now you can go to the practice section to understand these verbs better.
Spanish: No es tan complicado, ¿verdad? Ahora puedes ir a la sección de práctica para comprender mejor estos verbos.
