This is a free lesson from our course in Trigonometry
In this lesson you'll learn (with the help of several examples) how to multiply and divide two exponential terms with the same base. The key to
approaching the multiplication and division of two exponential terms is to remember
the rules.
For multiplication, you should follow the rule am an = am
+ n. When you multiply two numbers or variables with the same
base, you simply add the exponents. This is true for both numbers and variables.
When you divide two exponential numbers or variables with the same base, you subtract
the exponents. When you divide an exponential number by itself, the exponent is
0. When you divided by a larger exponential with the same base, the exponent is
negative. For example, 34 x 32 = 34 + 2 = 36.
On the other hand, when two numbers with the same base are divided, follow the rule am/an = am - n. For example, 34/32 = 34 - 2 = 32. In the situation of "power of a power", the rule is (am)n = am x n. For example, (34)2 = 34 x 2 = 38.
