Geometry: Classifying Polygons

In this lesson you’ll learn about Classifying Polygons, drawing help from the earlier learning of concepts of polygons. The presentation will be done by the instructor in own handwriting, using video and with the help of several examples with solution as required.
Polygons are primarily classified by the number of sides. You can name a polygon by the number of its sides. Refer to the table below showing the names of some common polygons:

(Continued from above) Polygons may be characterized by their degree of convexity:
convex: any line drawn through the polygon meets its boundary exactly twice. Every interior angle is less than 180°.
Concave: you can draw at least one straight line through a concave polygon that crosses more than two sides. At least one interior angle is more than 180°.
You may notice now how polygons can be classified in terms of symmetry.
A regular polygon is one that is both equilateral and equiangular. If a polygon is not regular, it is called irregular. All the sides are congruent in an equilateral polygon. All the angles are congruent in an equiangular. In case of rectilinear polygon, sides meet at right angles, i.e., all its interior angles are 90 or 270 degrees.
Some more classification: Special Polygons like- special quadrilaterals (square, rhombus, parallelogram, rectangle, and the trapezoid etc.), and special triangles (right, equilateral, isosceles, scalene, acute, obtuse etc.).
